Celtic Storytelling For All AgesWhether holding children enthralled by tales of dragons or mermaids, or moving an adult audience to tears with the Three Sorrows of Storytelling, Mara Freeman believes that the true role of the Celtic storyteller is to lead us through the gates of the Otherworld to the Land of Youth itself. She has performed stories in a variety of settings including festivals, libraries, bookshops, children's events and on public radio. She's taught workshops on Celtic mythology and shamanistic traditions at universities, colleges, conferences and retreats, and has written essays on Celtic culture that have been published in the U.S., Canada and Europe, including frequent articles in Parabola: A Journal of Myth and Tradition, is a contributor to the anthology Druid Renaissance (HarperCollins 1996), plus is engaged in completing two books. Mara is available for performances and workshops. You can reach her by email or at Chalice Productions, PO Box 3839, Carmel CA 93921. Mara Freeman, M.A., British storyteller, writer and teacher, grew up steeped in the rich traditions of the Celtic countries from an early age. She cannot remember a time when she was not fascinated by the magic of story and song that opened "the magic casements" of the Otherworld. She was educated at Bristol and London Universities in England, where she gained degrees in Literature, Language and Education. While still a student, she produced dramas with story, dance and song on themes from Celtic mythology. She went on to teach English and Drama at secondary school and at junior college level in London, dedicated to inspiring her students through poetry and the imagination. Now settled in Carmel-by-the-Sea on the misty central coast of California - a place where Irish mystics of W. B. Yeats' day once lived and loved too - Mara continues to uncover the treasures of Celtic mythology and folklore so that they may shine through the dust of the ages. She adaps and reworks old legends and poems from her extensive collection of rare books and tells the tales to the bell-like music of hammered dulcimer and zither.
